This pair of Baumann No. 56 bistro chairs from the 1950s–60s offers a timeless blend of simplicity, durability, and vintage charm. Crafted in bentwood and bearing the original Baumann stamp, these chairs were produced by the renowned French manufacturer known for its elegant, modernist approach to functional seating. The chairs retain their original honey-toned patina with visible signs of age which contribute to their authentic, lived-in character and vintage appeal. The curved double-slat backs add a graceful, flowing line to the silhouette, making these chairs as visually pleasing as they are comfortable.
Founded in 1901 by Émile Baumann in Colombier-Fontaine in eastern France, the Baumann company became one of the most prominent French chair manufacturers of the 20th century. Renowned for pioneering bentwood techniques and producing iconic bistro chairs, the firm reached its height in the 1970s. In addition to seating, Baumann also designed children's furniture, coat racks, and other decorative pieces. Today, Baumann chairs are highly sought after by collectors and admired as milestones in French design history.
Despite their lightness, these chairs are remarkably sturdy and stable, making them ideal for everyday use in a kitchen, dining area, or café-style interior. Their understated silhouette allows them to blend effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary spaces, while their mid-century heritage adds a quietly distinctive character to any setting.
