This Napoléon III period convex mirror, or Miroirs de sorcière dates from the late 19th century and features a richly toned, rounded wooden frame with remnants of original gilding and a warm, aged patina. The convex glass remains remarkably bright and reflective, showing only minor signs of age.

Miroirs de sorcière, or "witch’s mirrors," are distinctive convex mirrors that originated in 16th-century Europe and gained popularity in France during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their rounded, bulging surface was believed to have protective qualities, warding off evil spirits and reflecting light into dark interiors. Often framed in ornate, sunburst or neoclassical designs, these mirrors create a unique, panoramic reflection that adds depth and intrigue to any space. Today, they are prized for both their mystical allure and decorative impact.
