Mid-19th Century Eastern French Hand Painted Larch Escritoire Desk - 44"

This mid-19th century larch writing desk is a rare example of regional folk craftsmanship from Eastern France, beautifully merging rustic utility with decorative charm. Its distinctive structure features a slanted lift-top that opens upward, revealing a spacious writing compartment fitted with three small drawers and two open shelves, ideal for storing writing tools or correspondence. Unlike traditional drop-front desks, this piece includes a vertical panel that folds down to form a writing surface, supported by sturdy iron chains. A small wooden ledge on the exterior front is designed to hold a book when the desk is closed, allowing the piece to double as a lectern, an unusual and thoughtful feature that speaks to its multifunctional design and possible ecclesiastic origin.

The standout feature of this piece lies in its hand-painted façade. The front and top are richly decorated with floral garlands and delicate birds, all rendered in warm reds and greens against a patinated blue background. The central upper panel bears the initials "CMB" and the slant front shows the date 1856 framed by a decorative floral wreath. These elements suggest it may have been a commissioned piece, possibly for ecclesiastical use, as indicated by the painted cross on the front. Although the lock is no longer functional, the original key remains, adding a valuable historical touch. 

This escritoire’s irregular surface, visible wear, and naïve yet poetic brushwork give it a soulful, storied presence. More than a piece of furniture, it’s a piece of vernacular art.
