The Belgian midfielder has been a big part of the Everton squad since joining the club and played a massive role in keeping them in the Premier League last season.

Everton produced final-day heroics to avoid going down to the Championship and secure their Premier League status.

Onana admitted that he learned a lot about himself and his game in Everton’s efforts to keep themselves in the Premier League and he is now a little more aware of how he handles pressure from the club and the fans.

He stressed that the fight for survival at Everton helped him develop further as a player but insisted that he enjoyed the pressure of a relegation battle rather than wilt under it.

The Everton star told The Athletic: “I learned a lot about myself last season; how I handle pressure from the fans, club, team-mates.

“It helps you grow as a player and a person.

“Looking back now, I’m almost quite happy it happened because it’s part of a learning process.

“Throughout last season, I was saying in my head, ‘I can’t be part of the team that takes this massive club down to the Championship’.

“So it was tough but I don’t feel pressure because football is something I enjoy doing. It’s supposed to bring joy.”

Everton will again bank on Onana to come good this season as they stare at another long and hard battle for survival in the Premier League.
