Radiating the earthy charm of mid-century French ceramics, this hand-decorated plate by Gustave Reynaud for Le Mûrier, Vallauris, captures a joyful, stylized bird in soft terracotta red and sage green, framed by delicate floral motifs. The surface bears a fine craquelure under a transparent glaze, enhancing its rustic texture and celebrating the natural imperfections that define artisanal pottery.
Gustave Reynaud (1915–1977), a central figure in the postwar Vallauris ceramic revival, founded the Atelier Le Mûrier in 1955. There, he developed a distinctive graphic language rooted in Mediterranean folklore and modernist sensibilities. His work is instantly recognizable for its spontaneity, naïve clarity, and refined use of color. Marked with Reynaud’s signature, the back of the plate reveals the same craquelure glaze and hand-thrown ridges, underscoring the care and craftsmanship for which the Le Mûrier workshop is known.
Equally decorative on a table or displayed on a wall, this piece brings an authentic note of Provençal artistry to any space, offering both graphic presence and poetic simplicity. Another plate by G. Reynaud available to buy separately here.
