This antique silverplate egg cup set delights with its perfectly balanced proportions and tactile charm. The four goblet-shaped egg cups rest gracefully on slender stems, their flared, scalloped rims evoking the gentle undulation of flower petals. They sit securely on a square tray with softly scalloped edges and spherical feet, which elevate the whole composition with elegance and lightness. At the center, a shield-shaped handle rises like a small heraldic crest, both decorative and functional, anchoring the design in sculptural refinement. Each cup fits snugly onto small posts, and the spoons rest in specially designed holders, making every element feel intentional, satisfying, and pleasing to use.
The set is marked by Mappin & Webb, one of Britain’s most revered silversmiths, with a legacy dating back to the 18th century. With workshops in London and Sheffield, Mappin & Webb became known for supplying silverware to royalty and embassies across the globe. The polished silverplate surface shimmers with a soft, welcoming glow, enhanced by a light patina that adds depth and character. Though designed for functional use, the set is inherently decorative: an object that elevates even the simplest rituals.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
