A whimsical and finely modelled barbotine ceramic vase, this delightful composition features a spaniel standing alert beside a tree stump topped with a bright yellow canary. Signed "Faïencerie Artistique A. Valente, Nice" beneath the base, the piece dates to circa 1900 and exemplifies the spirited charm and vibrant glazing of French barbotine ceramics from the Belle Époque. The initials A.M. further suggest a workshop where individual artisans contributed to unique, small-scale production rooted in artistic craftsmanship.
The dog is portrayed with a calm yet attentive presence, simply captured mid-step, as if pausing on a woodland path. The canary perches quietly above, adding a touch of color and balance to the verticality of the tree stump. The textured foliage and softly glazed base complete a naturalistic scene full of quiet narrative and visual interest.
Decorative and functional, this sculptural vase brings a touch of storytelling and character to any space. A slender branch or a small, freshly gathered bouquet placed in the vase opening formed by the tree stump would complete the woodland scene, adding a gentle touch of nature to the composition. With its lifelike detail and animated presence, this piece is a conversation starter, rich in narrative appeal and visual intrigue.
