This elegant marquetry tray, delicately inlaid with a branch of flowering cherry blossoms, reflects the refined sensibility and Japoniste influence that defined French decorative arts in the late 19th century. Executed in rich-toned wood veneers, the floral design captures both grace and movement, set against the natural beauty of the grain. Though it bears traces of use and age, including some light surface marks, stains and one restored handle, its quiet beauty and artistic craftsmanship remain intact.
The tray is signed in marquetry "Gallé", indicating it is a work by Émile Gallé (1846–1904), one of the most celebrated figures of the French Art Nouveau movement. Gallé was a master of wood, glass, and ceramics, and his Nancy-based workshop became internationally known for designs that blended fine craftsmanship with poetic naturalism. His work was deeply influenced by Japanese art and botany, both of which are evident in the elegant cherry blossom motif seen here. Based on the form and the style of the inlaid signature, this tray likely dates from the late 19th century, possibly during Gallé’s lifetime or shortly after, when his atelier continued production using his motifs and mark.
It is a beautiful and evocative piece, offering a glimpse into the refined domestic artistry of the Art Nouveau period.
